Almost two weeks into a regional lightning bust across the Klamath and Siskiyou Mountains, the passage of Tropical Storm Hilary and subsequent wet lightning storms have kept things in slow motion on some fires, while others have dodged the rains and made major wind-driven runs. Several large fires are now established on the landscape, and enough heat remains in these that we’ll continue to see them spread when conditions permit.
This report examines current fire behavior and tactics on the Smith River, Six Rivers, and Happy Camp Complex fires as of about 2am, 8/25/20223.
The Lookout is an independent media company reporting on wildfire, forestry, land management, and rural culture. We are driven by a desire to help people understand how wildfires work, the strategies employed by people attempting to manage them, and the intersection of fire and culture.
