This report looks at the current conditions and expected fire behavior on the Timber Fire, in Big Sur, California. In the video, below, we use our trademark style of live mapping and storytelling to examine how wildfire works in Big Sur’s mishmash of unique environments, and how the terrain, fuels, and weather affect options for fighting this fire. The livestream also reports on other ongoing fires on the West Coast.

Big Sur (Timber Fire) Current Conditions and Outlook

Along the central California coast, the Timber Fire is burning in iconic Big Sur country: Smoke rises over dramatic coastal mountains, dropping toward Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean. But it’s not all pretty views. Firefighters must negotiate some of California’s most rugged slopes, covered with chaparral, dripping with world’s most potent poison oak, host to abundant ticks, and sprinkled with expensive real estate, accessed by some of the world’s sketchiest driveways.
The fire started near Timber Top, above Highway 1, and just south of iconic Big Sur spots like the Nepenthe Restaurant and the Henry Miller Library. Detailed mapping flights show the fire has slumped off the ridgetops toward the coast and spread north and south along the spine of the first ridge (Coast Ridge Road), but as of midday on August 11 it had not made large, aggressive runs straight downhill toward the coast.

Operational Objectives and Limitations
The current operation plan for firefighting on the Timber Fire aims to hold the fire:
- East of Highway 1
- North of McWay Canyon
- West of the Big Sur River
- South of Big Sur
That’s the ideal “box.” Yesterday’s box was smaller, hoping to hold the fire west of Logwood Creek and north of Partington Ridge, but the fire has pushed east and south, so the box grows. Some factors that will cause the control box to keep growing, especially to the east:
- No meaningful trail network or vehicle access to key tactical ridges to the east
- Lack of water sources on the ridgetops where vehicles can drive
- Very difficult ground for line construction (steep, heavy vegetation, no dozer access into wilderness areas).

Structural Threat: Big Sur Community
On the coastal front, though, the structural threat picture is less dire than some might fear. Highway 1 and the developed Big Sur corridor have relatively good access for engines and crews. California’s track record with structure protection in accessible terrain, absent truly extreme wind events, is strong. The fire must back downhill into communities rather than roar up into them from below – backing fire is generally slower and less intense, and the marine layer dampens fuels in many of the areas with the greatest population density.
The latest perimeter updates showed slow but steady down‑slope growth above key locations such as Nepenthe Restaurant, Deetjen’s, and the Henry Miller Library, not explosive head‑runs.
In our opinion, the fire is not likely to impact developed areas to the NW along Highway 1 with any significant force unless we get episodes of strong offshore winds which scour out the marine layer and prevent it from forming for multiple days.
The Marine Layer and Thermal Belts

One of the main reasons for slow spread to the west is the ‘marine layer’- a recurring band of fog which pushes in along the coastline and up over the lower slopes. That fog wets the grasses enough that they do not support fast, flashy spread. In effect, the marine layer is acting like a slow, natural air tanker along the immediate coast. At the same time, it has been thick enough at night to ground night‑flying helicopters that need clear air to dip from coastal water sources. For the strip along Highway 1, the fog is a blessing; for aviation, especially at night, it is a curse.

Thermal Belts
Above the marine layer (on the upper slopes of the coastal ridge and back side), the temperature are higher, and humidities are much lower. Here the fire remains active, even at night.When the cool, dense marine layer pushes into the coastal mountains, the dry air which was already there is forced upslope. This ‘compressional heating’ can further dry that displaced air, which being warmer and lighter, sits atop the marine layer. This phenomena forms what is known as a ‘thermal belt’, or ‘inversion’, where warm air sits atop colder air below, often forming a ‘cap’ on the clouds or fog, below. The fire can burn more readily within the thermal belt – this is why the fire is most active on the ridgetops and leeward side of the Coast Ridge Road. Structural Threat: Partington Ridge
In the near term, we think it is likely the fire will move south, past Partington Ridge, where the fire will be most active on the upper slopes. Though the fire is currently held up on the upper slopes of Partington Ridge, it is likely that the fire which is well-established lower in Torre Canyon to the north will come out of there later today. As of noon, there is no aerial firefighting going on, likely due to the depth of the fog layer, but once it is clear enough for airplanes, the fire will be free to run, also.

Lying across the transition from marine layer to thermal belt, fire behavior will be mixed on Partington Ridge, with upper slopes seeing more dramatic fire runs. The threat of structure losses increases with elevation. The better the view from the house, the sketchier the fire behavior will be. Many of the structure on the ridge are located in very difficult to defend locations, fire-wise, sitting at the heads of steep gullies.

Longer Term Outlook for the Timber Fire
The fire has crossed Logwood Creek, as of 9:30am, and will make slope-driven runs to the east. Friday afternoon the forecasts predict winds will switch to more northerly and the fire may make runs up the South Fork of the Big Sur River.
Without a strong assist from weather (cooling, higher humidity, or rain), holding the fire on creeks or interior ridges is unlikely. The more realistic trajectory is that the fire will continue to work its way across portions of the Ventana until seasonal weather slows it down, or it reaches old (re-opened) firelines on the other side of the Ventana, weeks from now, having grown to many tens of thousands of acres, and costing hundreds of millions of dollars to fight.
This fire has plenty of geography to run to the east into the Ventana Wilderness, and it will do so, making substantial runs on days where the winds, topography, and low humidities intersect. These conditions will be more likely during frontal passages, like the one we are going into in the next few days. Fire behavior will climax during late afternoon into the night, after daily inversions lift and smoke clears out of the canyons. In between weather systems, the fire will back downhill and make slow runs under heavy smoke inversions in the canyons.

Current Fuels Conditions
Current fuel‑dryness indicators for the central coast are also below their historical peak values; conditions do not match the kind of record‑dry, record‑hot setup that fed the 2016 Soberanes Fire. Even without direct impacts on structures in the community of Big Sur, the fire will have major impacts. It is the peak of tourism season, and smoke, the closure of Highway 1, and a lingering threat that the fire could come to the coast if we get sustained offshore winds all weigh heavily—but the ingredients for a worst‑case scenario where the fire rolls, full steam, out to the coast, are not in place yet.

This year, the fuels are not as dry as they were during the 2016 Soberanes Fire. Here is a comparison of 10-hour fuel moistures at the Arroyo Seco weather station from July 2016 vs July 2026.

Fire History and the “Ventana Box”
The Ventana Wilderness has a complex fire history, with multiple large fires since the 1970s:
- Basin Complex (2008)
- Soberanes Fire (2016)
- Dolan Fire (2020/21)
- Earlier fires such as the Kirk Fire (1999) and Marble Cone (1977).
These scars overlay each other on the same ridge systems. Because bulldozers are prohibited in the Ventana Wilderness, and there are few acessible road systems, mainly along the edges of the wilderness, crews return to the same logical control features each time we have a large fire here—these major ridges where bulldozer lines can be cut are known to firefighters as the “Ventana Box.”

The history of repeating fires also shows how often the coastal vegetation can carry fire. The Kirk Fire burned in 1999, Basin in 2008, Soberanes in 2016. Those dates suggest that on key parts of this landscape there has been enough regrowth to carry a substantial fire every eight to ten years. Dolan’s more recent footprint to the south has somewhat reduced fuel loading and could moderate behavior if the Timber Fire runs into it, but it is not a concrete barrier.
