The Plaskett Fire’s Got Potential – 8/31/3036

In the Lookout Livestream and written analysis, below, we take a look at the long-term prospects for the Plaskett Fire, on the Central Coast. If the fire isn’t held from spreading farther south into the Silver Peak Wilderness, the broken topography, lack of recent fires, and roadless nature of the Wilderness, all add up to high potential for a long-duration, expensive, and difficult firefight. While the fire is headed mainly into areas with very little human habitation,if it does become well-established to the south, the only thing that is going to it out in the near-term is major rain, which might come as a hurricane making landfall!

Plaskett Fire Becomes Big Sur’s “Big Dog” as Crews Confront Incredibly Broken Terrain

The Plaskett Fire on the South Coast of Big Sur has emerged as the dominant wildfire on California’s Central Coast, outpacing activity on the Timber Fire and forcing fire managers to ponder another very large “big box” for indirect containment strategies that could take weeks – or longer – to play out. We haven’t yet passed the point of no return for this fire to get completely away to the south – the next day or two will tell.
The writeup, below, looks at the fuels, terrain, weather, and access issues affecting the potential strategy for both the Plaskett and Timber fires, and what they mean for local communities and the wider early-fall fire season.

Plaskett Fire: A Fast-Growing Fire in a Tough Place

The Plaskett Fire is burning in an area of heavy coastal chaparral and limited recent fire history on the South Coast of Big Sur, between Monterey and San Luis Obispo. In the past 4 days it has grown to around 25,000 acres, and escaped the initial control box that firefighters had hoped to hold it within. On 8/30, at the time of our Lookout Livestream broadcast, it had spotted into the Silver Peak Wilderness, on the south,  and pushed eastward into heavy brush areas in remote drainages on the west side of the Fort Hunter Liggett army training base.

Today, 8/31, fire behavior has been much more subdued than it was yesterday afternoon and evening. A very deep marine layer build on the east and west sides of the fire, overnight, effectively halting fire spread in the foggy areas. The marine layer had cleared out, but 11am, but the fire has now run a lot of the headward slopes which were available to help supercharge its run, yesterday, and absent yesterday’s strong winds, much of the fire experienced low-intensity backing and flanking, today, with some headward runs in aligned drainages.

Yesterday afternoon, satellite heat signatures and web cameras showed large areas of intense crown fire as strong northwest winds blow the fire to the east and south. Aerial observers reported the eastward-spreading flaming front was 4-5 miles wide in early evening. Over the 48 hours leading up to the fire’s big run on 8/30, the fire transitioned from relatively modest behavior to a full-blown afternoon blow-up, maintaining significant heat overnight on the evening of 8/29, due to the absence of a strong marine layer in the southern portion of the coast.

Once a fire like this establishes in steep, broken, brushy wilderness with poor access, firefighters are often forced into the chess game that we call ‘indirect-attack’, building large firelines far ahead of the fire, with the hope that they’ll have time to prepare them with enough time to conduct ‘firing operations’ or ‘backfires’ to remove the fuel between the fireline and main fire, before the main fire arrives with a full head of steam. It is unclear what advantage today’s relative lull in fire behavior has bought for firefighters. It is possible that they have been able to engage dozers today to get in some line which will keep the fire smaller than the doomer big boxes we put up on last night’s livestream, and show later in this report.

Why the “Big Box” Might Get Really Big

For the Plaskett Fire, we looked at terrain models, the fire’s existing footprint, and potential upcoming weather to game out two potential control boxes for the fire.

  • A “smaller” big box of roughly 50,000 acres, assumes southward spread of the fire can be kept out of the Silver Peak Wilderness, and firefighters can use the South Coast Ridge Road, along the eastern boundary of the wilderness, as a fireline, and control the fire on the east when it reaches grasslands and oak woodlands on the flats of Fort Hunter Liggett, to the east, where firefighting is more straightforward.

  • A larger, conservative box of around 110,000 acres, assumes the fire will continue to spread south into the Silver Peak Wilderness, where discontinuous ridge systems and a lack of roads, and also, a prohibition on the use of mechanized equipment, will make indirect firefighitng impossible. This box stretches south toward Hearst Castle and encompassing much of the South Coast and all of the Silver Peak Wilderness.

Even the smaller box would yield a large fire by most standards, and the larger one reflects what the terrain and fuels could allow under persistent burning and limited weather help. We emphasize that firefighters do not like to “give up ground,” and there will almost certainly be multiple attempts to pinch and shrink these concepts in the coming days and weeks. But the terrain reality is unforgiving:

  • The Silver Peak Wilderness offers almost no continuous ridges that don’t “cliff out.”
  • There are few, if any, safe dozer options from key high points like Lion’s Den down to the active fire front.
  • Long-range spotting such as what we saw yesterday afternoon allows the fire to “hopscotch” across drainages, leaping ahead of any line that isn’t deeply prepared and fired out under favorable conditions.

Absent a major weather event, if the fire does move deeper south into the Silver Peak Wilderness (below), we’ll see a large, landscape-scale fire, that burns in fits and starts within the blue areas, above until tropical moisture or early-season storms finally lay it down.

The broken geography of the South Coast in and south of the Silver Peak Wilderness provides few opportunities for a major indirect control line.

Structures, Values, and Fire Ecology

One of the striking aspects of this situation is that, for a box this large in California, there are relatively few structures inside it. While this fire may become large, we are not likely to be facing a Paradise-style urban interface catastrophe that destroys tens of thousands of homes. But that does not mean there will be no human impact if the fire does indeed burn out to the larger box we have drawn here.

  • There are scattered homes and compounds along the coast and in the backcountry.
  • There is at least one significant inholding – a Buddhist retreat center – in the path of potential fire spread.
  • There are small historic structures, such as old mining cabins, that are inherently difficult or impossible to defend.
  • The South Coast of Big Sur relies heavily on tourism, most of which comes between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Any disruption to this already short season has major impacts on the local economy and the workers in the tourism industry.
  • With a major El Nino already on peoples’ minds, major rainfall on the new burn scars is likely to wash out sections of the perpetually ‘falling into the ocean’ Highway One, which is the sole access to these ‘back of beyond’ communities.

Our 8/30 livestream showed an example of a remote mining cabin in heavy fuels that almost certainly burned. Old, shake-shingled cabins deep in the brush are essentially stacks of kindling, with dry grass and shrubs running right up to the walls and roofs. Even with intensive fuels maintenance around them, these sorts of ‘shaggy old shacks’ are nearly impossible to save when a large, fast-moving fire arrives, accompanied by large amounts of flying embers. Shaggy shacks are like velcro for embers.

At the same time, much of the fire’s behavior – especially when it backs slowly downhill toward the coast – is ecologically beneficial. Mixed-severity burning in chaparral, oak woodlands, and redwoods can:

  • Clear old, dead brush and resprout new growth.
  • Thin dense understory vegetation and create new browse and travel paths for animals (and humans).
  • Kill small trees and free up space and water for the surviving, larger ones.
  • Spare many mature trees (The South Coast is host to the southernmost redwoods in the world, but redwoods are very difficult to kill with fire).
  • The broken nature of the topography, and the wild diversity of plant life along the radical gradients from sea-level to mountaintop, create a naturally heterogeneous fuelscape, leading to very patchy and variable fire effects.
  • In other words, mixed-severity fires promote pyrodiversity, which in turn supports biodiversity!

Role of the Marine Layer and the Coast

For residents and travelers along Highway 1, one of the biggest questions is whether the fire will burn all the way to the ocean.

Our assessment: it is more likely that the marine layer will stop the fire short of fully carpeting the coastline, but finger-like runs may reach down steep drainages toward the road where fog is less persistent. Historic fire perimeters and the behavior of earlier fires like the 1985 Gorda-Rat Fire suggest that moist, fog-cooled slopes can act as a “giant air tanker,” slowing or halting downslope fire spread near the ocean.

That said, if you live along the coast, you already know your local fog patterns better than anyone. Places that frequently sit above the marine layer may see more active fire behavior than locations that are regularly socked in with cool, wet air. Dwellings in places like the Los Burros neighborhood (elev. 2350) have been hacked into the midslope of the coastal mountains so the residents can enjoy stunning views and don’t have to live with perpetual mold and cold feet.

Timber Fire: Hung Up and Behaving—for Now

In contrast to the Plaskett Fire, the Timber Fire around Big Sur is currently:

  • Subdued, with relatively low heat output
  • Described as “hung up” on steep head slopes and ridgetops
  • Showing limited growth in the last 24 hours

Firing operations near Big Sur Lodge have largely done their job, and those areas are now mostly cold. On the north and east sides, the fire is backing slowly, giving crews time to strengthen and extend indirect lines, with the odds increasing that rain or seasonal moisture will ultimately put it out before it meets the full extent of the “big box” that has been conceptualized for that incident.

When we compare heat signatures from satellites, the difference between Timber and Plaskett is stark: Timber is smoldering and creeping, whereas Plaskett is throwing off large, sustained clusters of intense heat. Part of the reason for this is topography – the Timber Fire has had days of hot and dry weather where it was able to run to the tops of all available mountains. It now is forced to back downhill. Plaskett still has areas available for it to make slope-driven runs in contiguous heavy fuels. Some of Plaskett’s heaviest burning yesterday was downhill, but with strong NW winds…

Weather: Low Pressure, Moisture, and a Possible Tropical Wild Card

Recent and forecast weather trends are central to the storyline for both fires:

  • A prior heat dome over the West has shifted east, replaced by troughing/low pressure off the coast.
  • This shift has brought cooler, moister conditions to much of Northern and Central California, especially around Big Sur and into the Sierra foothills.
  • Fire growth on Timber has slowed, while Plaskett is still finding hot, dry windows in the interior where the marine layer is weaker or non-existent.

Model guidance also hints at the possibility of a tropical storm or hurricane tracking toward Southern California in the next 2–4 weeks. It is far too early to predict an exact track, but with unusually warm ocean temperatures and an active Eastern Pacific, the odds of a significant tropical-moisture event are not trivial.

 

If such a system (or even its remnants) interacts with the central coast, it could be the event that ultimately ends the Plaskett Fire, soaking fuels over a broad area. Until then, we expect a pattern of:

  • Generally moderate winds at the synoptic scale
  • Local variability and gustiness as systems move through
  • Continued transition from summer into early fall conditions

Fire History and Future Spread

Fire history maps around Plaskett show a patchwork of older burns:

  • Portions of the landscape burned in 1985 (Gorda Rat Fire) and 1996, now supporting around 40-year-old brush.
  • To the north, the Dolan Fire scar and associated dozer lines and access roads may act as a partial barrier; we do not currently expect Plaskett to push into Dolan or connect with the Timber Fire.
  • To the south and east, large expanses have little or no modern fire history, providing abundant continuous fuels across broken terrain.

The Chimney Fire (2016) in San Luis Obispo County was an important reminder that even landscapes we might mentally categorize as “grass and oaks” can host large, intense fires when chaparral and dissected topography are involved. Similar conditions exist in some of the potential future footprint of Plaskett if it continues to run toward inland communities, reservoirs, and the edges of San Luis Obispo County.


Prescribed Fire: Burning Safely in a “Fire Season”

Even as large wildfires burn, there are windows elsewhere in the state where prescribed fire is not only possible but necessary. This week, we plan to document an 8‑acre prescribed burn near North Bloomfield Road by Nevada City with First Rain Land Stewardship and partners from the local community.

The decision to burn in Nevada City is based on conditions, not the calendar:

  • Energy Release Component (ERC) charts show below-average to near-average fuel moistures, comparable to the driest periods of April or late November.
  • Temperatures, humidities, and forecast winds line up to create a safe burning window, assuming winds do not spike.
  • Cal Fire has issued a burn permit, signaling institutional recognition that smart, controlled fire is part of reducing future risk.

Our goal in covering this work is to help people understand that “fire season” is not a single, unbroken crisis, and that there are strategic opportunities to reduce fuel loads—even while large fires burn in other parts of the state.
