Southern Sierra Fires – 9/16/2021

The fires burning in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks and on the Tule River Indian Reservation are a bit outside our territory, but as Caldor and Dixie Fires wind down, we have some bandwidth to post the heat maps.

I (Zeke) am a Northern Sierra kid and not familiar with this part of the world at all, but we can share the information, at least.

If there is anyone down there that wants to help out with coverage of these fires, send us an email.

Here are some maps we made using data from the US Forest Service and National Park Service showing the locations of giant sequoia groves (yellow outline) along with prescribed fires since 2000 (purple) and prescribed fires since 2010 (green). The heat colors on here are from 2am on September 16.

The IR heat images below were captured about 9:30pm on September 15. Blue areas have burned in wildfires past five years.
